Not many dogs are famous enough to have a statue of themselves in the middle of a capital city. But Greyfriars Bobby is the exception! Forget Edinburgh Castle, forget St Giles' - this fluffy little Skye Terrier is one of Edinburgh's most famous monuments. But what was so special about this dog to merit pride of place in Edinburgh's streets?
Well, according to the old story, Bobby belonged to a man called John Gray, who worked for the police as a night-watchman. When John died in 1858, he was buried in Greyfriars graveyard in Edinburgh's Old Town. But Bobby the dog refused to leave his master. Fourteen years he sat loyally beside John's grave, becoming known across the city as Greyfriars Bobby! Fed by kindly passers-by, Bobby is said to have stayed in Greyfriars until the end of his own life in 1872.
