Few places are wilder than the Scottish Isle of Jura. A certain famous writer called it 'extremely un-get-at-able'. With a population of just under 200 people, Jura is one of the least densely populated islands of Scotland. Red deer roam the barren landscape, outnumbering humans almost 30 to 1. Rugged moorland and blanket bogs cover miles of the island, broken up by mountain streams, lochs and clumps of woodland. Three jagged quartzite mountains dominate the west - named for their breast-like shape, the Paps of Jura are tall enough be seen from Northern Ireland.

But it's not just walkers and wildlife buffs who are drawn to the shores of Jura. The island is also a pilgrimage site for George Orwell's devoted fans: Orwell lived here intermittently between 1946-49. It was Orwell who described Jura as 'extremely un-get-at-able'. He'd come to escape the grind of journalistic life in London, and it was here, living at Barnhill, that Orwell wrote his dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.

This design shows Barnhill draped in orange sunlight. A red deer stands guard on the hillside, and a thin ribbon of smoke climbs from the chimney. Secluded as it is, the area is a haven for wildlife - a pair of sea eagles nest nearby; minke whales and porpoises swim in the Gulf of Corryvreckan, site of the world's third largest whirlpool. Anyone who has visited Jura or read Orwell is sure to fall in love with this beautiful tea towel.

Half Panama organic bleached cotton (heavy weight, textured finish). Stitched on all four sides. Includes hanging loop. Measures approximately 48cm x 70cm. Machine wash at 40 degrees max. We recommend that before you use your tea towel for the first time you wash it at least once to soften up the material and make it more absorbent for drying dishes. Please note size can vary slightly.
