Named after the River Sid where it tumbles into the Channel, there have been settlements at Sidmouth since at least the Iron Age, no doubt because of its strategic coastal position. But it was only in the 18th and 19th centuries, when seaside resorts came into vogue, that Sidmouth became a popular tourist destination. People flocked here from across the country, not just to enjoy the good sea air but also to admire the impressive coastal vistas. Countless authors were inspired by visits to Sidmouth, from Thomas Hardy and William Makepeace Thackeray to H.G. Wells and Beatrix Potter. And it’s easy to see why!
