Named for its high concentration of religious burial chambers and standing stones, Holy Island lies just off the coast of Anglesey. And beyond the granite cliffs of Holy Island is South Stack, a small wave-thrashed sea stack in the Irish Sea. There have been a fair number of shipwrecks along this jagged coastline, so it's no surprise that in the 19th century they decided to build a lighthouse here.
Completed in 1809, the South Stack Lighthouse is 91-feet tall, its light covering seven acres of sea. Luckily there's a bridge now, but back in the olden days, the only way to get to the island was in a basket suspended from a hemp cable - which doesn't sound particularly comfortable, not to mention safe! And if that isn't exciting enough, the lighthouse was one of the filming locations for the television show Most Haunted - apparently it's haunted by the ghosts of old lighthouse keepers and the lost souls of shipwrecked sailors!
This design shows the iconic lighthouse towering over the waves, seen from the gorse-coated cliffs above. For anyone with romantic dreams of living a lonely life by the sea, this tea towel would make the perfect gift!
