Lincoln - Crooked House tea towel

The city of Lincoln has always been known for its buildings. For some two hundred years, Lincoln Cathedral was the tallest building on the planet. And Lincoln Castle is familiar to people across the world too - it's the oldest of the filming locations featured in Downton Abbey!

But for people looking for something kooky, the Crooked House in Lincoln is a favourite. Number 40 Michaelgate looked like any other terraced house until the 1930s, but during a slum clearance, when this house was scheduled to be demolished, a half-timbered building was found beneath the brick façade. Built way back in the fifteenth century, its tipping south gable and its bending timber frame have made it one of the most famous spots in the city. The house leans warily back from the street, almost as if it's afraid of passers-by, as if it knows how easily it could fall. It's a marvel that it's standing to this day!
