At first glance, Carnforth is just like many other North Lancashire towns. So why is Carnforth so famous - not just across the country, but across the world? Well, believe it or not, it's because of the railway station. Carnforth is a classic railway town - in 1857 it became a junction for multiple railways, and the town grew in size from there.
But it was only in 1945 that the town shot to fame, when it featured in David Lean's film Brief Encounter. Since then, the station has become a popular pilgrimage site for fans of the film, and was refurbished in the 2000s to include a 'Brief Encounter' refreshment room, matching the studio set used in the film. It's in this refreshment room that the couple first meet, and it's here that they say their last heart-broken goodbyes.
