Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald are two of Scotland's most famous architect-designers. The husband and wife were prominent figures in the Glasgow School in the early 20th century, and their pioneering Art Nouveau style brought international fame to the Scottish scene. It's safe to say that they were quite a design-conscious couple - especially when it came to designing their own home!
The Mackintosh House is a faithful interior reconstruction of the Mackintoshes' terraced house in Glasgow. The original house on 78 Southpark Avenue was demolished in the early 1960s, but luckily the fixtures were preserved and reassembled so that members of the public can still enjoy the home's distinctive interior. It's even been furnished with the Machintoshes' own furniture, so everything is elegant lines, strong right-angles, and subtle curves - illustrating the Mackintosh belief that a room is a work of art.
