Ahh, Morecambe – a birdwatcher’s paradise, a sunbather’s dream, and a classic British seaside destination. With origins in the 1840s as an important harbour and port, Morecambe became a busy holiday resort in the 20th century, mostly attracting workers from Yorkshire and north of the Scottish border. For several years, it was even the home of the Miss Great Britain contest!
Plenty of well-known people have lived and holidayed in Morecambe – Tyson Fury, Emma Atkins, Alan Bennett. But perhaps Morecambe’s most famous resident was a certain John Eric Bartholomew: better known as Eric Morecambe, one-half of the comedy duo Morecambe and Wise! So beloved is Eric by the people here that they commissioned a statue in his honour. Cast in bronze by Graham Ibbeson and unveiled by the Queen in 1999, it shows Morecambe in the iconic “Bring Me Sunshine” pose – skipping along and smiling from cheek to cheek.
This design shows the Morecambe statue backed by blue sky, with wide views across the open bay. Morecambe and Wise captured the hearts of people across the world. Why not celebrate the classic duo with this stunning tea towel? Go on: bring some sunshine into your kitchen!
