We all know the stories. Robin Hood, cloaked in Lincoln Green with bow-and-arrow in hand, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor with his band of Merry Men - there aren't many legends more famous than this!
Unveiled in 1952, the iconic Robin Hood statue in Nottingham pays tribute to this heroic outlaw. This seven-foot bronze figure weighs a whopping half-ton and stands with bow bent and arrow notched, ready to fire. According to one story, Robin Hood was once held prisoner in Nottingham Castle, and managed to escape through a system of underground caves and tunnels. So there's hardly a more appropriate place for this statue to stand than just outside the castle walls, the point of his arrow tellingly aimed at the gatehouse - anti-establishment as always!
But it isn't without its fair share of controversy. Many people were expecting to see Robin wearing a pointed triangular cap and feather, rather than the leather skull cap chosen by the sculptor as the more historically-accurate headwear worn by medieval foresters. Nonetheless, thousands of visitors flock to the statue every year, taking photos standing beside their hero. This tea towel would make the perfect gift for any lover of legends and folklore!
