America likes to pride itself on the strength of its democracy, and no place is more symbolic of that than Washington D.C. Named after the first US President, Washington isn't just the capital city: it's also the seat of the federal government and includes the White House, the Supreme Court, and the United States Congress.
The Capitol building is the seat of the Congress, and it stands at the eastern end of the National Mall, right at the centre of the city's four quadrants. This is the beating heart of American democracy, and the Capitol's neoclassical style - the columns, pediments and white exterior - deliberately echo the architecture of ancient Athenian temples. Athens, after all, is seen by many as the birthplace of modern democracy.
Of course, history has unfolded here for centuries. This is where Presidents are inaugurated, and where the important decisions of the American government are made. But long before the city was built, the lands around the Potomac River belonged to various tribes of the Piscataway people, Native Americans who were driven out by European colonists.
So much history and symbolism is captured in this design, which shows the Capitol at sunset, an orange-purple sky overhead. So why not pay tribute to democracy, fragile and valuable as it is, with this stunning tea towel?
